Photographs of renovation progress: March 16, 2007

March 5, 2007. Going
.The ground is still partially
covered in snow as the 1980 elevator tower's demolition begins.
On February 28, the roof was removed; early March saw the
removal of the limestone facing.
|

March 7, 2007. Going
the stairwell and tower are demolished-care
being taken to disengage the tower from the building. Concrete
saws did most of the work.
|
|

March 15, 2007. Going
more of the tower has been demolished.
The concrete walkways that connect the tower to the building
are being jack-hammered. (Note that window installation has
begun in the upper left corner-room 302,)
|

March 16, 2007. Gone! A quick finish from the blows of a backhoe,
and the remaining tower tumbles. The foreground rubble mostly
will be removed over one day (Monday, March 19). The openings
covered in plastic sheeting-formerly hallways leading to the
elevator-will be rebuilt in their original form (windows). The
old ground level entrance, now blocked from view by rubble,
will be lowered 3 ft and reconstructed.
|

March 20, 2007. Room 201, on the building's southwest corner-this
space formerly was composed of offices and part of a student
room. It will be Dr. Paul Shand's research lab. Windows are
in the midst of being installed, and cabinetry will be installed
in late March. The fume canopies are above where Dr. Shand's
research equipment will stand. Through the windows at right
is the newly renovated ITTC (formerly the East Gym); the Rod
Library can be seen through the window at far left.

March 20, 2007. Ground floor, west hallway. The walls show
evidence of steps and the previous floor level. The thick band
comes from the removal of the old chair rail. The west stairs-just
above the workers-wait to descend. A new floor and new west
entrance will appear in the next month. The old exterior ground
level in the distance will be lowered 3 feet, to match the new
west entrance..

March 20, 2007. The ground floor, looking west toward where
the 1980 elevator tower once stood. Construction workers are
shoveling rubble from where steps and a 3-ft-higher floor used
to be, The new west stairwell will start where the workers are
standing, and the new west entrance will be 3 feet lower than
before (to allow handicap access). The renovation has generally
worked from top to bottom in the building, and the ground floor
is the level with the greatest amount of work left to do.
|

March 20, 2007. Top floor, room 302, at the northwest corner
of the building. This was the computer classroom. It will be
the research lab of Dr. Tim Kidd. Cabinetry and some furnishings
(such as the metal cabinet at right) are beginning to be placed
and installed. A metal grid crosses the ceiling to allow Dr.
Kidd's research equipment to be suspended, to reduce the effects
of external vibrations on experimental measurements. New windows
are in place-just installed a week earlier.
